Mad Samurai Films Mission Statement

The goal of Mad Samurai Films is to provide high quality low cost film product to a very large under serviced market, namely the science fiction / horror / action genres.

Legal Status and Strategic Overview of the Company:

Mad Samurai Films is a Canadian Corporation owned and operated by Richard Collier. There are several key members and companies associated with the Corporation who provide services on a contractual basis.

Philosophy of Principals and of Planned Projects:

The President, Richard Collier, has sought out individuals with like interests; professionals in the film industry who are motivated to provide Mad Samurai Films with the tools to create the most marketable product.

The large studios rarely cater to a massive segment of their audience (the science fiction / horror / action movie fans) and when they do, the product is deplorable. These fans prefer movies that are made specifically for the die hard science fiction / horror fan. Not just a two hour-long flashy music video watered down to a PG rating. Fans will pay to watch those movies, but prefer the action and horror aspects exclusively produced for them, the Science fiction / Horror / Action fan, and the budget is not an issue.

The classic "B" movies are still rare treats that these millions of dedicated fans seek out and openly crave. A wonderful example is the remake of the "B" horror classic Dawn of the Dead. The original is touted as one of the best horror movies of all time yet had a budget of far less than two million US with returns of over $60,000,000. The remake of this classic in 2003, with its $28,000,000 budget (and returns of over $75,000,000 as of June 2004 before DVD release which should double the returns) is the subject of websites and a fierce outcry from fans protesting what they see as an assault on a classic. Huge budgets do not necessarily make classics; they make blockbusters and with the larger investment comes a massive risk. With a smaller budget and by catering to a starved market that not only watches but also purchases the product and its ancillary goods, the principals at Mad Samurai Films have come up with a formula that is time proven and very difficult to break. In making a feature movie, there are three points that must be considered of which only two can be applied to any given project. It can be:

  1. Inexpensive
  2. High Quality
  3. Expedient

This is referred to in the industry as the "Good, Fast or Cheap" rule. Mad Samurai Films prefers Inexpensive and High Quality, opting for extensive planning in pre-production and attention to detail, as well as the use of the latest technologies available to the Low budget independent filmmaker. By planning and working with industry professionals Mad Samurai Films will minimize the possibility of overruns in post production.
